Australia’s conditional automated vehicle pathway

The national pathway is conditional and location-specific. It should not be presented as a launch commitment for T Cab or any particular robotaxi provider.

The 21 November 2025 decision and the 2027 pathway

Transport Ministers agreed on 21 November 2025 to enable conditional automated vehicle deployment from 2027 in selected locations, depending on jurisdictional laws and capabilities. The decision date is separate from the publication date of this commentary. The NTC program page is the official source for the pathway and its conditions.

Controlled trials are not general commercial availability

As checked on 7 October 2026, the NTC states automated vehicles are not yet available commercially or for general use on Australian public roads. Controlled trials require the relevant permissions and operating arrangements. A trial, an overseas launch or a static vehicle display does not automatically establish a general Australian ride service.

What this means for Sydney readiness

Ground-operations planning can identify infrastructure requirements and responsibilities before a deployment is approved. It cannot substitute for applicable laws or regulator decisions. T Cab’s roadmap is illustrative and conditional: no approved operating area, procurement commitment, partnership or passenger-service date is promised for Sydney, Kingswood or any other location.
